Planning a Funeral is an opportunity to bring families closer.

“When a loss occurs in a family, the most important thing for us to do is to listen to everybody and make sure everyone feels like they can share their thoughts.” Those are the wise and compassionate words of David Smetak, Manager of the Hallowell & James Downers Grove location.

David has a kind and gentle way about him that helps relieve tension during difficult times. He compassionately guides families through the process of making arrangements. David understands that every person in the room has experienced an emotional loss. He helps families work their way through the healing process. Planning a funeral gives families a chance to celebrate the life of a person who is loved and missed. David is a remarkable listener as are all of our professional funeral directors. Every arrangement has its own unique characteristics and circumstances and every family teaches us something new and valuable. It starts and ends with “listening”. And in the middle; more listening.

The Thank You Notes remind us why we went into this profession in the first place. We are grateful for every one of them.

When you choose to be a Funeral Director, you’ve made a difficult choice that has more meaning than you would ever know before entering the profession. That is the case for the entire James Family and all the professionals and staff that make up the Hallowell & James Family.

While difficult, it’s also incredibly rewarding. We always feel appreciated when families share their personal expressions of gratitude with us and from the inspiring Thank You notes we receive. We read all of them. Every word. For us, it’s caring recognition that we’ve accomplished what we set out to do; serve our families beyond their expectations.

We are ready, any time of the day or night on any day of the year, to help you when you need us during your most difficult time. We promise you will experience a high level of professionalism, kindness, compassion, care, and patience while you sort through the difficulties connected with a profound loss. Our mission is to bring comfort to you and take care of everything you need. Your final moments and time with your loved one are precious. We’re here to ensure that is the only priority you have during that time.

A Thank You note isn’t required so when a family takes time out to send us one, while they continue to cope with a recent loss, it is humbling in a way we never take for granted. Our family is here for your family. To be acknowledged in such a special way is a moving experience for us, for which we are very grateful.

Choosing Merchandise with Care

In Bill James’ experience, he has sensed that families face a difficult and challenging moment when it comes to choosing merchandise. The reality of a lost loved one seems to be more present when they are making these choices. “This is an industry that isn’t wrapped around merchandise. It’s about service that’s helping people achieve a comfort level with all of the choices they are making” as Bill explains. He adds, “Hallowell & James are here to assist, to make sure families have all the information they need and want to make extremely personal decisions. It requires whatever time a family needs and it’s decided when the family is comfortable in their decision”.

Bill shares his father’s view on this topic, “this is a place where we can separate ourselves by providing the best service”.

3 Generations of the James Family serving families in our Downers Grove & Countryside locations

Bill James, along with his brother Tom, and sisters Dottie and Aileen, are the 3rd Generation of the James Family to continue their tradition of assisting families in need at the most difficult times in their lives. Overall, the James Family has been there for nearly 100 years, with locations in Downers Grove and Countryside.

The entire family, and their professional staff of long tenured professionals who aren’t just “like” family, they are family, have grown up understanding and helping and paying attention to every detail, big or small, to assist and comfort the families who need them. Bill’s father Rich had a mantra that “there is no such thing as a trivial detail. There is but one opportunity to get it exactly right”. That remains the James Family Mantra to this day. When you entrust arrangements to Hallowell & James, and the care and security of your loved one is placed in our hands, we accept all the responsibility that comes with your trust.

That means we will see to every detail and every desire to ensure you focus on celebrating the life of your loved one and greeting your family and friends who come to honor them. It’s a privilege we take very seriously that people have chosen us for one of the most important responsibilities there is in our lives. Our family understands and appreciates the trust and confidence, and we commit to live up to that for every moment, every time.

We do everything we can to see that Veteran’s receive every benefit they’ve earned.

When we serve a Veteran and Hallowell & James, our responsibility is heightened. We are serving a person, who’s unselfish and dedicated to our country has earned some important benefits. Many families don’t know, or don’t know the extent of those benefits. It’s our responsibility and our honor to ensure that our Veteran’s receive the care and the honors they’ve earned.

Hallowell & James Manager and Funeral Director Matthew Gadbois comes from a family that has a deep tradition of military service to our country. Among the services that Veterans receive is an American Flag to drape the casket and to be presented to the honored Veteran’s closest next of kin. Matthew hand irons the flags to ensure that they are crisp, clean and looking as perfect as possible. Details are never trivial when it comes to honoring the lives of Veterans. Never.

When a family loses a loved one who is a Veteran, we all lose someone. Veterans have earned special benefits. At Hallowell & James, we ensure that every family knows and has the opportunity to understand what those benefits include and how we can ensure that every Veteran receives the full measure of the honors and benefits to which their service entitles them. Those benefits include burial benefits at no charge in a National Cemetery such as Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.

The most practical reason to Pre-plan services is to make your wishes known.

Hallowell & James Manager, Funeral Director and Certified Pre-planner, Howard Eggert, often consults with individuals and families about pre-planning funeral arrangements. To Howard, any age or stage of life is appropriate when considering pre-arrangements. There are many reasons to pre-plan funeral arrangements, including having a record of your wishes to guide your family when the time of need arises. Many families find that pre-planning relieves an extra burden on a family that is already grieving from their loss. It is comforting to know the desires of your loved one. Another key benefit, is that pre-planning acts as a way to curb inflation if the service is pre-paid, it locks in the cost. Many financial planners have been adding Pre-Arranged Funeral planning to their advisory portfolios.

If you would like to ask any questions of Howard or any of our professional Funeral Directors about pre-planning or at-need services, feel free to contact us any time day or night. We are here any time you need us. 708-352-500 or www.hjfunerals.com

Some Advantages to Planning Ahead

Planning ahead for funeral services is a process more and more people are choosing to do. There are some important advantages to doing so. At Hallowell & James, Pre-planning can be accomplished in a few ways. Sometimes, it’s just as simple as having a list of preferences that is kept on file until which time they are needed. Nothing is set or unchangeable until the actual final arrangements are made. Downers Grove Manager David Smetak explains it this way, “Making arrangements ahead of time is a way to help a family know what their loved one wanted. Situations change, wishes change and circumstances change sometimes. Having something provided in advance simply helps take some of the anxiety away for grieving families”. When it comes to Pre-Planning at Hallowell & James, our professional Funeral Directors will offer every option available to meet your level of comfort.

If you are considering some level of Pre-Planning, we offer at no obligation or cost, a consultation to provide the full range of options. We’ll answer all your questions so you can decide if this is an option you prefer.

Being a Funeral Director at Hallowell & James

Matthew Gadbois is the Manager at Hallowell & James Countryside location. Along the way to managing the funeral home, Matthew learned a great deal about the importance of being a family owned and operated funeral home. “The standard of work here reflects that we treat your family as our family”, is how Matthew describes it. At the conclusion of services, it’s common for the thanks to come in the form of a handshake, hug, and sincere and heartfelt thanks. That’s not why Matthew and his fellow directors do this, but it’s a very important reminder as to how important a professional and caring funeral director means to a family. The hours are long and the schedule is unpredictable; like life itself. When you know that you’ve truly helped people at a time where it feels hopeless or inconsolable, you understand that you’ve made a choice to do something unique and special with your life that gives it greater meaning. Matthew and the entire staff at Hallowell & James in Countryside and Downers Grove feel precisely that way.

To discuss at-need arrangements or pre-planning (with no obligation) with Matthew or another of our professional Funeral Directors in Downers Grove 630.964.6500 or Countryside 708.352.6500 or visit www.hjfunerals.com
